What is DPMO?

DPMO (Defects Per Million Opportunities) is a critical metric in Lean Six Sigma used to measure process performance. It calculates the number of defects that would arise if there were exactly one million opportunities for a defect to occur. It normalizes defect rates so you can compare the quality of different processes regardless of their complexity.

DPMO vs DPU (Defects Per Unit)

While DPU (Defects Per Unit) simply divides the total defects by the total units produced, it doesn't account for the complexity of the unit. A car has vastly more opportunities for a defect than a paperclip.DPMO solves this by factoring in the Opportunities for Error (OFE) per unit.

  • DPMO Formula: (Total Defects / (Total Units × Opportunities per Unit)) × 1,000,000

How to use the DPMO Calculator

  1. Units Produced: Enter the total number of items, batches, or services completed.
  2. Opportunities per Unit: Enter the number of ways a single unit could be defective. For a simple form, it might be the number of required fields (e.g., 5).
