What is Takt Time?
Takt Time is the theoretical "heartbeat" or pace of production required to meet customer demand. Originating from the German word for "baton" or "rhythm", it tells you exactly how fast you need to produce one unit to satisfy your customers without overproducing (which creates waste) or underproducing (which creates backlogs).
Takt Time vs. Cycle Time vs. Lead Time
These three Lean metrics are frequently confused, but they measure entirely different things:
- Takt Time: The pace you need to work at (driven by the customer).
- Cycle Time: The pace you actually work at (how long it takes to complete one unit from start to finish).
- Lead Time: The total time the customer experiences (from placing the order to receiving the product).
How to calculate Takt Time correctly
- Net Available Time: This is your total shift time MINUS planned downtime. If your shift is 8 hours (480 minutes) but you have a 30-minute lunch and two 15-minute breaks, your Net Available Time is only 420 minutes.
- Customer Demand: Enter the number of units the customer requires during that same time period (e.g., per day or per shift).
By dividing the Net Available Time by the Customer Demand, this calculator will show your Takt Time. If you also enter your actual Cycle Time, it will calculate your Utilization Rate and estimate how many operators you need.

No. Available time should only include the actual time workers are actively producing. You must subtract lunch breaks, scheduled maintenance, meetings, and standard rest periods from the total shift time.
